Free Short Devotions & Activities for Nursing Home Residents

Gentle, faith-based ideas and printables for activity directors, chaplains, church volunteers, and families.

Leading a meaningful faith activity in a nursing home or assisted living doesn't have to be complicated. The most effective devotions and activities are short, familiar, and gentle - built around the hymns, Scriptures, and prayers residents have known their whole lives.

Here's how to lead one well, plus free printables you can bring today.

Open with a familiar hymn · read a short, well-known passage aloud (Psalm 23, the Lord's Prayer) · share one gentle large-print activity · close with a blessing. Keep it to 15-20 minutes.

A simple format that works

Open with a familiar hymn, read a short and well-known Scripture aloud slowly, offer one gentle large-print activity or reminiscence prompt, and close with a blessing. Short and familiar beats long and new, every time.

3 short devotions for nursing home residents (ready to read aloud)

Each of these takes about two minutes — a familiar verse, a gentle thought, and a one-line prayer. Read slowly, and pause to let residents finish the words they remember.

1. You Are Not Forgotten. "I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands." — Isaiah 49:16. However much a day may slip away, we are never out of God's sight or His memory — He holds each of us by name. Prayer: Lord, thank You that we are always held in Your hands. Amen.

2. The Lord Is My Shepherd. "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." — Psalm 23:1. A shepherd walks beside the flock, step by step, watching over every one. We are gently led, provided for, and never walking alone. Prayer: Good Shepherd, thank You for walking with us today. Amen.

3. New Every Morning. "His compassions fail not. They are new every morning." — Lamentations 3:22-23. Every new morning is a fresh gift of God's love — no yesterday is too heavy to be met by today's mercy. Prayer: Father, thank You for Your mercy that meets us new each day. Amen.

What are good devotions for nursing home residents?

What activities work in assisted living and memory care?
Large-print Bible word searches, read-aloud Bible stories, hymn singing, reminiscence prompts, and simple sensory activities. Choose gentle, achievable options so everyone can take part.
How do I start a nursing home ministry?
Start small and consistent: a short weekly session of a hymn, Scripture, and one activity. Coordinate with the activity director, keep it 15-20 minutes, and use familiar, large-print materials.
