The Story

A star that led the way to Jesus

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2)

The star went before them until it came and stood over where the young child was. And when they saw the star, the Bible says, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

The Mystery

What was that light in the sky?

Here is the wonder. The Bible tells us the star appeared, guided the wise men, and stood over the place where Jesus was. It does not tell us exactly what it was. People who love the Bible have wondered gently for centuries:

Some think it may have been a bright conjunction of planets, a comet, or a new star (a nova) that appeared in those years.
Others believe it was a special light created by God for that one holy purpose — since an ordinary star could not “stand over” a single house.
Many are content simply to say it was a sign from heaven, given to announce the birth of the Savior.

Scripture does not settle the question, and that is alright. What matters is not the science of the star but where it led: to Jesus. It still points there today.
