The Story

An ordinary day that turned holy

Long ago, Moses was tending sheep on the far side of the wilderness, near a mountain called Horeb. It was an ordinary day, like so many before it. Then something caught his eye.

A bush was on fire — but it was not burning up. The flames rose, yet the branches were not turned to ash. Moses said to himself, "I must go and see this strange sight." As he came closer, a voice called out from the middle of the fire: "Moses, Moses!"

"Take off your sandals," God said, "for the place where you are standing is holy ground." Then God told Moses that He had seen the suffering of His people, who were slaves in Egypt — and that He was sending Moses to lead them to freedom.

The Mystery

A fire that gives light but does not destroy

Here is the gentle mystery. The Bible tells us plainly what happened — the bush burned and was not consumed — but it never explains how. And perhaps that is the point. The wonder is not in the science of the flames. It is in what the fire meant.

Think of it: a fire that gives light and warmth, yet does not harm the very thing it touches. Many have seen in that a beautiful picture of God's presence — powerful enough to light up a mountainside, and gentle enough not to destroy. God did not need a grand palace to meet Moses. He came to a humble bush, on an ordinary day, and made the ground holy simply by being there.

When Moses asked God His name, God answered with words people have pondered ever since: "I AM WHO I AM." Not a God who used to be, or who might one day be — but the God who simply is, always present, always near.

That was God's promise to Moses at the burning bush, and it is His promise still. We may feel small, or unsure, or that our best days are behind us. But the same God who lit that bush and did not consume it says to us, quietly, "I will be with you."
