Long ago, in the land of Babylon, a powerful king named Nebuchadnezzar built a giant golden statue and ordered everyone to bow down and worship it. But three young men who loved God — Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — would not bow to anyone but the Lord.

The king was furious. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual, and had the three men thrown inside. The fire was so fierce it harmed the guards who carried them.

Then the king looked into the flames — and leapt to his feet in astonishment. "Did we not throw three men into the fire?" he asked. "But I see four men walking around, unharmed — and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."

When the three came out, they were completely unharmed. Their clothes were not scorched. There was not even the smell of smoke on them.

The Mystery

Who was the fourth man in the flames?

Here is the wonder that has stayed with people for thousands of years. The Bible tells us the king saw a fourth figure walking in the fire — but it never gives him a name. King Nebuchadnezzar, a man who did not know God, could only describe him as looking "like a son of the gods." Later, the king praised God for sending "his angel" to rescue the three men.

So who was he? Christians have wondered gently for centuries. It is good to remember Scripture doesn't settle it:

Many believe he was an angel, sent by God to protect the faithful three.
Many others believe it was the Lord Himself, appearing centuries before He was born in Bethlehem.

The Bible leaves his name a mystery. But it makes one thing beautifully clear: the three men were not alone in the fire. They were not spared the furnace — but they never walked through it by themselves.

“When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God.” — Isaiah 43:2–3
