Who Was the Queen of Sheba?

A gentle, large-print Bible mystery to read aloud and wonder over together — no memory test, no wrong answers, just a little wonder to share.

She arrived with a caravan of camels, spices, gold, and precious stones — a queen from a far country, come to see for herself whether the stories of King Solomon's wisdom could possibly be true. The Queen of Sheba appears for one shining chapter and then returns home. Who was she?

The Story

A royal visitor who came to test Solomon

When the Queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's great wisdom, she came to test him with hard questions. She arrived in Jerusalem with a very great company, and Solomon answered all her questions — “there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not.” (1 Kings 10:3)

When she saw his wisdom, his house, and the order of his kingdom, the Bible says “there was no more spirit in her” — she was overwhelmed. She blessed the Lord, exchanged rich gifts with the king, and returned to her own country.

The Mystery

Where did she come from?

Here is the gentle wonder. The Bible calls her homeland Sheba, but does not draw us a map. People have wondered about her for centuries:

Whatever the exact country, her story carries a beautiful meaning. She traveled a great distance to seek wisdom — and Jesus Himself later pointed to her as an example of someone who earnestly sought the truth, coming “from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon.”

A Verse to Remember

“The half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.” — 1 Kings 10:7

She had heard wonderful reports — and found the reality even greater. It is a lovely picture of how faith often works: the closer we come to God, the more we find that the half was never told.

Let's Wonder Together

There are no wrong answers here — just gentle questions to share aloud:

Lord, like the Queen of Sheba, give us hearts that seek wisdom and truth. Thank You that the closer we come to You, the more we find the half was never told. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Who was the Queen of Sheba in the Bible?
The Queen of Sheba was a royal visitor who came to test King Solomon with hard questions after hearing of his great wisdom (1 Kings 10; 2 Chronicles 9). She arrived with a great caravan of gifts, was overwhelmed by his wisdom and kingdom, blessed the Lord, and returned home. Her personal name is never given.
Where was the land of Sheba?
The Bible does not say exactly. Many scholars place Sheba in southern Arabia (around modern Yemen), a region rich in spices and gold; others connect it with Ethiopia in Africa. Because Scripture gives no map, her homeland remains a gentle mystery.
Why is the Queen of Sheba important?
She traveled a great distance to seek wisdom, and Jesus later held her up as an example of someone who earnestly sought the truth, coming 'from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon' (Matthew 12:42). Her story is a picture of seeking — and finding more than was promised.
