The Story

A tower meant to reach the heavens

After the flood, the people journeyed to a plain in the land of Shinar. They said to one another, “Let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name.” (Genesis 11:4)

They had learned to make bricks and mortar, and so they began to build upward, together, with one language and one purpose.

The Mystery

Why did God confuse their language?

Here is the wonder. God came down, saw the city and tower, and knew the people would grow proud and unrestrained if nothing stood in their way. So He confused their language, so they could no longer understand one another, and He scattered them across the earth. The place was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth.

The Bible's meaning is clear even where the details are not: it is a picture of human pride reaching for the heavens on its own terms — and of God, in wisdom, humbling and scattering. Yet the story of Scripture doesn't end in scattering. At Pentecost, God brought people of every language together again to hear the good news.
