It is one of the most dramatic scenes in the whole Bible. In the middle of a great feast, a mysterious hand appears and writes words on the palace wall — and a mighty king turns pale with fear. We even still use the phrase today: “the writing on the wall.” But what did it mean?

The Story

A hand that wrote at the king's feast

King Belshazzar of Babylon held a great feast. In the middle of it, the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote upon the plaster of the wall. The king watched, and “his countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him… and his knees smote one against another.” (Daniel 5:6)

None of his wise men could read the writing. So the queen remembered a man of great wisdom — Daniel — and he was brought in.

The Mystery

What did the words mean?

The words were: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. They were strange even to those who could read the letters — and this is the heart of the mystery, because their meaning had to be given by God through Daniel. Daniel explained:

MENE — God has numbered the kingdom, and brought it to an end.
TEKEL — the king has been weighed in the balances, and found wanting.
PERES (UPHARSIN) — the kingdom is divided, and given to others.

That very night, the Bible says, Belshazzar was slain, and the kingdom passed to the Medes and Persians — exactly as the writing foretold. The mystery was never in the letters, but in the message: that God sees, God weighs, and God is over every kingdom of men.
